Over the early years of the company, Corvus founders Kendra Fujiwara and Michael J. Coffey had many discussions about how to grow the Corvus programs, and how to best suport and connect coaches--indeed, the whole coaching community. One idea they kept coming back to was the idea of a non-ICF coaching rotation. That is, a Corvus peer coaching program for coaches that may understand the philosophy and definition of coaching that any ICF-affiliated coach would agree with, but perhaps not the ICF-sanctioned educational program. They felt that it was important to open the gates to students of schools that hadn't yet received ICF accreditation, natural-born coaches, or those who have learned a lot through reading or other learning outside of a classroom, who want a place to practice and get feedback. Of the over 160 organizations listed as a "Coach Training Program or School" at Peer Resources (www.peer.ca), fewer than 20% are listed by the International Coach Federation as Accredited Coach Training Programs. They also discussed the legal, political, and industry-specific implications of not being 100% exclusive in the acceptance of coaches trained according to ICF guidelines. But in the end, they came back to the reason they started Corvus--to connect coaches, to increase the depth and breadth of experience for coaches, and to cross-pollinate ideas, techniques, and resources thoughout the coaching community. And if the purpose was to connect coaches in the whole coaching community, it didn't quite seem right to exclude graduates from around 140 coaching programs in favor of the other handful of programs. So, in the spirit of those discussions, Corvus has loosened the requirements for participation in the Monthly Peer Coaching Program. Any coach who has not taken a basics class from an ICF-accredited program can still participate, provided he or she agrees to the ICF Code of Ethics and satisfies at least two of the following:
Additional programs and books will be added to this list as we have a chance to review them to ensure that they both give some kind of instruction of how a person coaches another, and generally has the same definition of what coaching is.
